Zohran Mamdani states his intention to reside in the iconic Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that sparked debate during his election bid.
A Traditional Abode
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, hesitated to declare he would live there immediately after his electoral win in November.
"My choice was based on keeping my family safe and the need to directing my complete efforts on implementing the affordability agenda the city's residents voted for," Mamdani said on Monday.
Thanking a Neighborhood
He resided in Astoria, Queens, an area known for its abundance of immigrant communities and international dining.
"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Even though I'm moving there, Astoria will always live inside me and the work I do," he affirmed.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani tied his central policy – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his opponents, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he is from a famous family.
Previous Exceptions
Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side during his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg felt it should be a place for public city functions, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.
A Grand New Home
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will experience an environment a stark contrast to his humble Astoria apartment.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.
Within, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated to reflect the home's historical period.
The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, which means the city imposes caps on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.
City residents see such units as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses exceeds the average income.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
