Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared during his trip to Washington that the Russian president's decision to request talks with the US president signals Moscow is feeling pressure. Zelenskyy commented, "It's evident that Moscow is rushing to restart conversations immediately after it hears about Tomahawks." These remarks addressed earlier comments about supplying long-range missiles to Ukraine.

Diplomatic Moves and International Reactions

A former American diplomat, a foreign policy expert, commented, "The Russian leader is trying to derail the momentum toward increased pressure on Russia." Fried continued, "The outcome will become clear tomorrow, but the chances of achieving a truce by pushing Russia to get serious appear to have decreased."

This situation came after Trump had in recent days been strengthening his language toward Russia until Thursday's conversation with the Russian president, which the Russian government characterized as "extremely frank and trustful."

EU Energy Sanctions and Economic Impact

EU authorities have set a mandate for fuel suppliers into the EU to demonstrate their products are not sourced from Russian crude, according to a official guideline published on recently. This step is part of the European Union's forthcoming ban on purchases of fuels made from Russian petroleum, which forms part of its 18th restrictive measures against Moscow over its military actions in the region.

Financial experts observed that investment patterns appeared to be considering the potential end of Indian imports of Russian crude. Some Indian refiners are preparing to cut purchases from Russia, with projections of a phased decrease, as reported by insiders familiar with the matter.

"This represents a favorable turn for the oil market as it would remove a big customer of Russian crude," said Tony Sycamore, adding that crude values were stable on Thursday.

Security Situation and Energy Attacks

A massive Russian unmanned aircraft and rocket assault hit energy infrastructure in eastern Ukraine on the same day, causing outages in multiple areas. Authorities in Ukraine reported that Russia launched hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, along with glide bombs.

"This autumn, the Russian forces use daily opportunities to attack at our energy infrastructure," declared Volodymyr Zelenskyy, noting that strikes impacted the areas of northern Ukraine, eastern Ukraine, Poltava, northeastern Ukraine and western Ukraine.

International Political Reactions

Kyiv's representative to the United States, the Ukrainian ambassador, stated that Russia showed its real approach to peace through the "terror" of these attacks. "The Russian government once again opted for weapons over talks, turning this assault into a clear blow to ongoing peace efforts," Stefanishyna commented.

Meanwhile, the European Union's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, stated that the European Union had no choice but to build up anti-drone defences against Russia. She revealed a "plan" to get ready for potential security challenges by 2030, including a new anti-drone system to be completely functional by the 2027 deadline.

The proposed system, dubbed the "EU defensive program," is projected to start operations initially by the 2026 timeline and be completely operational by the end of 2027. Brussels aims to secure the support of EU leaders at a meeting next week.
