The Red Devils Poised to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the WSL side.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be building momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further activity:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
