Citizens have gathered across the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.

The assault resulted in more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are considered reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"The bloodthirsty enemies have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the leader stated on Tuesday.

He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will not create a threat to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The government authorities postponed formal remembrance events until 16 October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still were held throughout the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the families of people killed in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised throughout Israeli television channels.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed throughout the country.

Peace Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a second day of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the plan.

A prominent Palestinian official knowledgeable about the discussions indicated that an night meeting of negotiations commenced at 7 PM local time.

The source explained the day's discussions ended without significant progress, due to conflicting views over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not recommence combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.

He added that the talks are "challenging and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to reduce the differences between the both parties.

Essential Issues in Discussions

  • A permanent ceasefire
  • The exchange of the captives still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for relief supplies provision
  • Post-war management of the area

Citizen Reaction

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that about 70% of the population prefer the hostilities to end in exchange for the liberation of the captives.

Gaza Conditions

"We are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are resting together, embracing, especially my youngest child who rests his face on me the entire evening."

"Continuously we check the reports to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be finalized and that the war will return to us."
