Democrats Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials demonstrated anger after Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and declared they should be taken into custody and penalized "by death" following their publication of a disputed video.

The Message That Triggered the Controversy

The video footage, shared on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic congress members who in the past served in armed forces or intelligence roles.

"Like us, you all swore an vow to safeguard and defend this national charter," the lawmakers affirmed in the 90-second video. "And right now, the dangers to our constitution are not only from abroad, but from domestically. Our laws are clear, you can decline illegal orders, you can decline improper directives, you have to reject unlawful commands. No one has to execute directives that contravene the legal system or our constitution."

Donald Trump's Angry Reaction

The video message seemed to trigger a furious reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.

On later in the week, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate publication, he wrote: "This represents really concerning, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their comments cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Leaders Respond

Following Trump's statements on that day, Top Democrats released a joint statement censuring the comments.

"Violent politics has no place in America," they declared. "Representatives who participated in the video all acted our United States with exceptional national pride and excellence. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous calls for execution against members of Congress, and appeal to House Republicans to vigorously do the same."

The party representatives also stated that they had been in communication with security officials "to guarantee the security of these members and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must without delay take down these radical social media posts and withdraw his dangerous rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the statement stated.

Officials' Defiant Response

The lawmakers who appeared in the video also released a response.

"We serve as ex-military personnel and security experts who love this country and took an oath to safeguard and defend the national charter of the United States," they said. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we aim to maintain it. No warning, pressure, or incitement will stop us from that fundamental obligation."

"The most revealing aspect is that the president deems it subject to penalty by death for us to reiterate the law," they continued. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their support as they fulfill their oath to the constitution and obligation to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."

They stated: "Every American must unite and censure the ex-president's requests for our death and partisan aggression. This is a period for principled stance."

More Governmental Reactions

The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's comments and posted on online networks: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the execution of elected officials."

He continued: "This represents an direct THREAT. All senators, each house member, all citizens – regardless of party – should denounce this without delay and unconditionally."

The GOP leader justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", describing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This represents very dangerous, you have important representatives of Congress instructing troops to defy commands, I think that's without precedent in American history."

The Conservative representative also reportedly stated to the press that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the crime of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to parse the language and decide all that."

White House Response

During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a journalist, "Does the president want to put to death elected officials?", the executive branch representative responded: "Absolutely not."

"Let's be clear about what the former president is addressing," the official stated. "There are active officials of the federal government who conspired to arrange a video message to members of the American armed forces, to current military personnel advising them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."

She stated: "The sanctity of our military depends on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is broken, it can cause casualties, it can cause disorder, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally encouraging."
