Condemnation Explodes as Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Draws Fierce Backlash
Figures from across the political spectrum and the entertainment industry are uniting to censure Donald Trump for his comments following the tragic passing of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Online Statement
After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles home, Trump took to his platform to label the late director as "tortured and suffering". The post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the anger he caused others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".
Police Developments and Detention
Authorities have since announced the arrest of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bond was established at a substantial sum.
A Wave of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians
The response to Trump's words was immediate and harsh.
“What a appalling and vile statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also criticized the remarks. Goldberg pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump about the killing of an activist, asking, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any lower?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a sick man."
Echoing this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from Within Political Ranks
Some Republican lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also alluded to challenges with substance abuse and mental health within families.
Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged members in his political party to justify the comments.
Reiner's History and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a past conversation, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also cautioned about the risks of autocracy if Trump return to power.
"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democracy crumble around the world."
Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and denounced political violence unequivocally after the killing of another individual.
A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal
Adding a element of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the story of the session, mentioning Trump's request for "special hairspray" while posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
