Scorching conditions and raging bushfires have swept through the dry landscape of Western Australia. As temperatures forecast to continue climbing above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe alert for extreme heat has been declared across a large portion of the south-west.

Broad Heatwave Warnings Across Multiple States

These conditions come after recent bushfires in another state, which resulted in the loss of properties and loss of life. Severe heatwave warnings have also been activated for the coming days in areas within SA and New South Wales, as a system of atmospheric pressure shifts to the east, delivering intense sunshine to much of the area.

The combination of tinder-dry land and unbroken high temperatures presents a volatile scenario for firefighters.

Global Weather Extremes Trigger Chaos

Elsewhere, a major city was plunged into darkness last week after strong gusts damaged the urban electrical network, with falling trees knocking out electricity cables. The weather conditions also caused significant travel disruption at a major airport, where numerous air services were grounded. Substantial impact on power systems is anticipated to create further problems as utility companies work urgently to reconnect electricity to more than 1 million residents.

Atypical Mist Blankets Sunny Region

At the same time, a valley known for its clear skies and plentiful sunlight has experienced one of its dullest and most overcast periods on recorded history. A particular form of fog, which typically lingers for only a short time, has been unusually widespread and persistent this year, holding temperatures at a key transport hub under 8C for over a week – the most prolonged period in more than three decades. The extended haze has been driven by exceptional autumn precipitation that left the ground waterlogged.

Storm Brings Snow to Tourist Destination

And in another country, a weather system has ushered in intense rainfall, powerful winds and even snow to a group of islands – weather many would not connect with this favored holiday destination. While snow is not unheard of at elevated areas, the system brought some of the heaviest snow depths in 2016 to a national park, compelling its temporary shutdown.

In addition to the snowfall, fierce northerly winds buffeted the island chain, with gusts reaching 50mph observed on multiple islands. The influence of the weather event is expected to ease this week with more typical conditions taking hold.
